The Merck Group, branded and commonly known as Merck, is a German multinational science and technology company headquartered in Darmstadt, with about 57,000 employees and present in 66 countries. The group includes around 250 companies; the main company is Merck KGaA in Germany. The company is divided into three business lines: Healthcare, Life Sciences and Electronics. Merck was founded in 1668 and is the world’s oldest operating chemical and pharmaceutical company, as well as one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Merck Company produces and supplies chemical and laboratory materials with different grades:

  1. 1. Analytical chemistry grade: materials with very high purity of nearly 99%.
  2. 2. Laboratory chemistry grade: materials with a purity of nearly 97%.
  3. 3. Laboratory general chemistry grade: materials with varying degrees of purity.
  4. 4. General chemistry grade: materials with a purity of nearly 95%.
  5. Industrial chemistry grade: materials with a purity of less than 90%.

Sigma Aldrich

Sigma-Aldrich is an American company that was formed from the merger of Sigma and Aldrich in 1975 in the field of life sciences and most of its products are used in pharmacy and biotechnology. The company operates in 40 countries and produces organic and inorganic chemicals, reagents, enzymes, carbohydrates, amino acids and their derivatives, antibiotics and other chemicals and biochemical. In 2015, Merck acquired the American manufacturer and became the largest pharmaceutical company in the world by merging with other biotechnology companies.
